Greeting from Ambassador
2023/1/7
Dear readers of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia website,
I am Atsushi UENO, the newly appointed Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia.
It is a great pleasure and honor to serve as Ambassador to Cambodia, a country with a long history, rich culture and an excellent relationship with Japan.
Japan and Cambodia established diplomatic relations in 1953, making this year, 2023, the 70th anniversary of the relationship. The two countries have built a strong and trusting relationship through cooperation during the Cambodian peace process and subsequent reconstruction period. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary in 2013, we upgraded our bilateral relationship to a "strategic partnership" and we have intensified our collaborative efforts across various fields over the past decade. In 2022, the bilateral relationship grew even closer when Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Prime Minister Hun Sen held four summit meetings and agreed to further upgrade the bilateral relationship to a "comprehensive strategic partnership” from 2023.
As Ambassador, I would like to focus on interacting with as many Cambodian people as possible, from both the public and private sectors, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the country’s society and culture. Through such exchanges, I will do my best to further develop Japan-Cambodia relations. I would also like to develop trade and investment relations, as well as continuing the economic cooperation that supports Cambodia's economic and social development which Japan has been providing for many years.
The Mekong region and ASEAN, of which Cambodia is a part, are located at the heart of the Indo-Pacific region. This region has the potential to become the "open growth center" of the world, and it is, therefore, extremely important for realizing the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). Cambodia is geographically located at the heart of these areas and, having successfully held the ASEAN chairmanship, has played an important role in the international community in 2022. As a long-standing, close friend and comprehensive strategic partner of Cambodia, Japan looks forward to continuing to work with Cambodia on a variety of regional and international challenges.
According to a survey carried out in October 2022 to ascertain the number of Japanese residents in Cambodia, there are approximately 3,400 Japanese nationals residing in Cambodia. In addition, the number of Japanese companies operating in Cambodia has been increasing in recent years. As Ambassador, it is also my important duty to ensure the safety of Japanese residents in Cambodia, assist them in their daily lives and support Japanese companies in their activities in Cambodia. I will work to fulfill these tasks to the very best of my ability.
Thank you for this opportunity to greet you all. I would appreciate your support for me down the road.
