Message from Ambassador Kumamaru
Hi, I am Kumamaru Yuji, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Japan to Cambodia. Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia. In recent years, Cambodia has achieved remarkable levels of development and successfully served as the presidency of ASEAN last year. Noted as one of the major factories of the world, with its society more vibrant than ever and its economy expanding satisfactorily with a tendency of the increased investment from Japan, Cambodia is now showing substantial changes. As a representative of Japan, I am honored to be responsible, in such an exciting time, for diplomatic relations between Japan and Cambodia. Diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Japan were established in 1953. Since then, the early 1990s in particular, Japan has offered various kinds of support to the reconstruction and development of Cambodia, such as the first-ever contributions overseas by Japan's Self Defense Forces as part of United Nations peace keeping operations, implementation of support projects by the Japanese Government and non-governmental organizations, cooperation in the conservation and restoration of the Angkor site, contributions towards the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and so on. Last year, there were the visits of the Crown Prince, the Prime Minister Noda (at the time) and the Foreign Minister Gemba (at the time), and at the beginning of this year, we had a visit of the Prince Akishino to Cambodia which actually strengthens the good relationship between the royal families of the two countries as well as the development of a closer relationship between Japan and Cambodia in political, economic, and cultural terms, etc. Moreover, since this year is the memorable 60th Anniversary of diplomatic relations being established between Japan and Cambodia, we are going to celebrate various cultural events in Cambodia to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Friendship. In addition, Japan is also paying great attention to the development of the Mekong Region, including Cambodia, and focusing on strengthening its relations within the areas. Our Embassy will make efforts, together with the JICA Cambodia Office, JETRO, Japanese companies and residents in Cambodia, to further strengthen bilateral ties between Cambodia and Japan. I would also like to welcome Japanese people from outside of Cambodia to come and visit and to work with us to promote friendly and cooperative relations between our two countries. KUMAMARU Yuji |
