Embassy of Japan in Cambodia
The Japanese Government has played a major role in the field of restoration and
preservation of the cultural heritage in Cambodia since the peace agreement was reached in early 1990's.
1. ICC-Angkor
Japan hosted the TOKYO Conference for Preservation of Angkor monuments in October 1993,
and as an outcome of the Conference, the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor (ICC-Angkor)
was established to coordinate international preservation and development efforts in the Angkor Park. Since then, the ICC has been organized regularly twice a year,
getting together representatives of the Royal Government of Cambodia, including the APSARA Authority,
and other partner countries providing cooperation as well as experts coming from around the world to rescue historical monuments in Angkor.
On behalf of the Government of Japan, the Embassy of Japan (Ambassador and Deputy Chief of Mission) has been assuming the Co-Chair of the ICC-Angkor,
together with France for over 20 years since its inception. Japan has been also supporting the organization of the ICC meetings by providing its administrative cost (approximately 27,000USD per year).
2. the Japanese Government Team for Safeguarding Angkor(JASA)
With respect to specific preservation activities,
the Japanese government established the Japanese Government Team for Safeguarding Angkor (JSA) and launched
a project funded by UNESCO/Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Preservation of World Cultural Heritage in 1994.
Since the 3rd Phase Project, JSA has implemented the projects jointly with APSARA Authority.
The Japan’s contribution to the JSA projects amounts to more than 26 million USD in total.
So far, over 800 Japanese experts of various fields have been dispatched to Cambodia to engage
in conservation and restoration activities alongside of more than 70 Cambodian experts and craftsmen.
